"The world is becoming more cognizant about safety, and because of these heightened concerns, NDT Certification is getting more recognized," Many certification bodies and institutes are promoting professionalism in various countries of the world.

Qualification and certification of NDT personnel in accordance with Recommended Practice ASNT SNT-TC-1A, is applicable to each of the following methods such as Acoustic Emission Testing, Electromagnetic Testing, Infrared and Thermal Testing, Leak Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Magnetic Flux Leakage, Neutron Radiographic Testing, Liquid Penetrant Testing, Radiographic Testing, Ultrasonic Testing, Vibration Analysis, Visual Testing and Predictive Maintenance.

There are three levels of qualification and certification in accordance with ASNT SNT-TC-1A

NDT Level I

An individual certified to NDT level I, is qualified to properly perform specific calibrations, specific NDT, specific evaluations for acceptance or rejection determinations according to written instruction and to record results. A NDT Level I personnel should receive necessary instruction and supervision from a certified NDT Level II or III individual.

NDT Level II

An individual certified to NDT level II is qualified to perform and direct non-destructive testing in accordance with established or recognized procedures. Level II individual is qualified to set up and calibrate equipment and interpret and evaluate results with respect to applicable codes, standards and specifications. Should be thoroughly familiar with scope and limitations of methods for which qualified and should exercise assigned responsibility for on-the-job training and guidance of trainees and NDT Level I personnel. He should be able to organize and report the results.

NDT Level III

An individual certified to NDT level III may be authorized to direct any operation in the NDT method (s) for which he is certified. An individual is qualified to develop, qualify and approve procedures, establish and approve techniques, interpreting codes, standards, specification and procedure and designate the particular NDT Methods, techniques and procedure to be used. Should have sufficient practical background in applicable materials, fabrication and product technology to establish techniques and acceptance criteria when one are otherwise available. A NDT Level III Personnel Should be capable of training and examining Level I and II The qualifications of an individual are based on education, level of training, examination, work experience, and the ability to pass a near vision acuity and color contrast differentiation test. Certification of an individual is the responsibility of employer.

A general examination is a closed book written test which covers the general theory of applicable NDT Method

Specific Examination

This open examination is relates to specifications, code, procedure, equipment and technique which are used by a particular employer and requires a specific level of expertise.

Practical Examination

This examination tests the ability of an individual to operate the necessary equipment, calibration, evaluation, interpretation of result and accept or rejection of the part under test.
